3. I went back and forth on this one, but I AM willing to ship worldwide. :)
4. A winner will be selected randomly and announced on FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2013, by 9:00 PM EST. Please make sure your ask boxes are open so I can contact you! If I’m unable to get in touch with a winner, I’ll re-select.
5. Good luck! :D
Everyone needs to watch this.
okay. let me just write my feels here, because i really have a lot of them and they’re eating away my fucking heart (or what’s left of it). warning: it’s gonna be quite long and english is not my native language, so i’m sorry for any horrors that may be down below.
i’ve always thought that the stories of the “old generation”, let’s call it this way, were the most intriguing ones of the whole book: maybe it’s because joanne didn’t really tell us everything about them, just bits and pieces. or maybe it’s because the marauders were this amazing group of friends everybody would want to have (except for peter, but even that’s not completely true, even if, i mean, i wouldn’t like my friends to sell me to a dark wizard that wants to kill me, or anything of the kind). also snape’s story, the heartbreaking one, the one that got us all crying, belongs to the “old generation”.
but i think that what makes them so great is that they were boys. schoolboys, thrown into a war that was so so much bigger than them. i remember some lines from les mis (pardon me but i really can’t avoid it), like, “we’ll be ready for these schoolboys, they will wet themselves in blood”, sung by javert in one day more, or also “did you see them, going off to fight? children of the barricades who didn’t last the night. did you see them, lying where they died? someone used to cradle them and kiss them when they cried. did you see them lying side by side?”, sung by the women cleaning the streets after the fall of the barricades. what i’m trying to say it that we sometimes forgot how young they all were.
really, the movies gave us a brilliant sirius in gary oldman, and a magnificent severus in alan rickman, but they’re both in their fifties, or sixties, i guess. let’s just make a few calculations: the first wizarding war started around 1970 and, as we all know, ended on the night of october 31st, 1981. sirius was eleven when the war started. james, lily and remus were 10. they were all in their late teen years when they started fighting, just out of hogwarts and into this world of flashing green lights and deaths and friends turning against one another.
really, can you imagine how that must have felt? and let’s not forget the most tragic fact: james and lily were 21 when they both died, 21 and with a one-year-old baby son. this video captures this image perfectly, because they were so young, so young. the tragedy of this reality hits me like a hammer everytime i think about it, and let me tell you, i think about it quite a lot.
but apart from this, let me try to state my point. let me try to tell you just how great were the marauders: because i love them so, and i needed to write about them, really.
now, let’s start with james, shall we? i know how some people criticize him, because he was really bitchy when he was young and he thought himself so superior to the rest of the world. true. i mean, it’s not like he wasn’t. but see, this is what makes him so great. because it’s real. what joanne did was creating a perfectly normal teenage boy, who’s very good at sports and who brags about it. who is popular and brags about it. i mean, i know american tv series are full of clichés, but i can assure you things here in italy aren’t that different. popular guys make fun of losers, and i’m not saying it’s right, i’m just saying it’s normal. and james was normal and real for this. yeah, he was a real shit, but then we know he matured. and isn’t this worth everything? that he put his head right back on his shoulders, that he realized the world didn’t revolve around him, and that he truly learned what “love” meant? i mean, this kid was twenty-one when he sacrificed himself for his son and his wife. twenty-one. a year older than i am now, and i’m here blogging (now i now that’s fantasy and this is reality, but let me make comparisons anyway).
then, we have sirius. can we consider sirius’ background for a moment? it’s like coming today from a very conservative family and wanting to become an artist or get a tattoo or something, i guess. his family hated mudbloods and then here he is, on a completely different level of thinking, and it’s like he’s disowned. i mean, he ran way from home when he was sixteen or something. yes, he was very full of himself, but i think that somewhat this self-assurance was his shield. because i believe he felt broken inside, at least a little bit. and this kid, at twenty-two, saw his best friend dead, and was jailed because he was believed to be the murder. he endured azkaban for most of his life, since he died at 34, and he didn’t go crazy. not so much, at least. he was still able to love and to care for harry in grimmauld place, and i really admire him for everything.
remus. oh, how i love remus. fragile, shy, because he carries this great, horrible secret for which he’s not responsible, but that he thinks will make everyone around him look at him in horror. he has found this great group of friends and doesn’t want to lose them, so he lies to them. and then, what does he discover, when they find it out? that they break laws to get a chance to be with him, and that surely they don’t despise him: maybe they love him even more. and of course older remus was broken, older remus didn’t accept tonks’ love right from the start: he had seen all of his friends, all of the people who really saved his life, die or get lost in front of him. the pain he had to bear. remus really reminds me of marius (again, les mis. sorry not sorry): “there’s a grief that can’t be spoken, as the pain goes on and on: empty chairs at empty tables, now my friends are dead and gone”. remus was a kind soul to whom horrible things happened, and i think that joanne did the most perfect work with him: he made him delicate, because he is delicate, and still rough, a fighter, ready to step up again against the same evil that took his friends away from him.
now, i want to spend a couple of words on peter. everybody’s going around saying “why did he end up in gryffindor?”, “was the sorting hat smoking with dumbledore and gandalf that day or what?”, and stuff like that. but, i don’t feel like condamning him in toto. i mean, what he did was the worst treason possible and dante put traitors of friends in the most deeper part of hell in his commedia, and that’s something that i completely share. still, i think we have to at least try to understand him: he was always the unwanted, the overlooked. james was the magnificent one, sirius the charming one, remus the kind one. he was peter. the other one. and he was put in front of a choice that was save his friends or save his life, and this has nothing to do with being a gryiffindor or a slytherin (i guess in some ways this could be said for snape too): it’s a matter of being a human being, and choose. and peter chose and chose himself, wether snape chose lily, and all the consequences that choice brought along. let’s see peter here: young, scared, alone, in front of this terrible dark wizard who is throwing the world he knows into chaos. he should have stepped up, yes, but it was human that he didn’t. so cheers again, joanne. but i’m still somewhat glad that you killed him off.
i could add snape and lily here, but i feel like this would become a papire, so i’m going to stop. let me finish with tags because tags are good:
